40 years ago, on Friday 20 July 1984, I started cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats with my friend Mark.
A-levels were done, we were 18 and fit, we had a tent, two racers, a map of the UK, a sense of the prevailing winds, and I had money in a Post Office book.

There we met a cyclist who was cycling from John o' Groats to Land's End.
These photos were our way of proving that we had achieved the whole journey.
We ended our first day at St Mabyn and pitched our tent.

We learned so much about our country, its history (old tin mines appeared throughout the second day of our ride), how it fits together, and its scale.
I didn't sleep well in a hot tent for much of the first week as a result of that mistake.
