Um, here is the original UK version of the text, which omitted the affectionate leg throwing and sociability/easy togetherness. This censorship to me suggests it was not the norm & that this is queer even w/in its contemporary social context, no?

oh yeah, like Moby Dick is Just Like That the whole way through (Melville had a complex around Nathaniel Hawthorne and this was the only way for him to express those feelings)
for sure!! i guess i was curious, given its publication, like, if people at the time read it or understood it as queer yk?? or was like, that level of "sociability" (hehe) just like, a thing between menfolk at the time. (apparently the original review in the nyt disparaged it for being perverse too)
