Yeaaaah he really didn't. Cosmatos was a guy who Stallone brought in when the studios wouldn't let him direct FB2 or COBRA and he basically just stood around while Stallone did the actual directing.
TOMBSTONE was originally supposed to be directed by Kevin Jarre, the screenwriter, but he cracked under the pressure (it happens). Kurt Russell started directing while the studio looked for a new director, and Stallone told Russell about the Cosmatos trick, and Russell suggested him.
So, in truth: Kurt Russell is the person who directed TOMBSTONE for all actual intents and purposes. Cosmatos was just the studio insurance in case he couldn't do it.
