For me, it's often excitement. If I start something and make it to 10000 words and still have ideas and be excited and constantly thinking about it, then I've got something.

The emotional plot line works.

The action plot line matters less to me. Action possibilities are endless.

But emotional truth isn’t just “anything goes.” It either rings true or it really doesn’t.

I can usually tell once I'm a few chapters deep. Working with my mentor and talking things through as I go along also makes a big difference. #MomsWritersClub

I'll usually try changing the opening scene as a first step, and making sure I'm starting in the right place. But if it's still not working, I'll move on to a different idea, but leave the door open to come back to it.

For sure! For one of my projects, I realized I was opening at the wrong point in the character's life. It was still helpful to have worked through it to better teach myself her backstory, though.

The words (mostly) come easily, scenes come fully formed, I can see the trajectory of the story and points to hit to get there. It’s still work, because I can’t see everything, but I have the high points and a good sense of the low points.

I know I'm on the right path when the story just spills onto the page. It's also a gut feeling that everything is playing out how it should be for that story.
