Watching the 50th Anniversary show for SNL. I’ll skip over the way the show has become a bit safe and corporate since a while ago. What I’ll say is that this show definitely defined a lot of my youth. Friends and I would reenact skits after school. Do impressions we saw. This is how central it was:

My friend said, “Wait. You had to be, like, ten years-old then.” That was correct. He couldn’t believe I was invested in that late night show at that age. But I was. My friends were. We loved that show.
It’s difficult for younger people to understand how pervasive that show was. How it smashed onto the culture, suddenly.
But watching it tonight evoked some real old, fun, warm memories. Yes, it misses more than it hits. But back then when it hit, it shaped comedy.
