Every memory in dark beginnings is of Maria calming Shadow and giving him positive thoughts, but in the present we are shown that no one even attempts to talk shadow down because he wont allow himself to ne vulnerable, he's not capable of having positive thoughts because he keeps shutting them down

Black Doom's plans in the story is to deceive him into becoming violent, giving him new habilites to keep fighting, taunts him and keeps bringing him back into Radical Highway, the time where he was fully indulging in his hatred, Back Doom wants THAT Shadow again

So even when Shadow has gained all the powers that Black Doom's gave him, by accepting maria's words in his heart again, and allowing himself to feel, he manages to reject Black Doom's influence.

Shadow finds strength in welcoming Maria into his heart and allowing himself to feel, the defeat of Black Doom shows that Shadow is taking control of who he is, rejecting the person Black Doom wants him to be by evolving from the feelings he kept shutting down

In the end, Shadow is forced to be apart with Maria again, he tries to fix it, he's desperate, he's feeling, he cries, he grieves, that grief could allow him to finally be able to truly "move on" one day.
