Depending on the seal it can even be healthier for the product to unseal it. Plastic wrap shrinks over time and can crush boxes if it gets too tight. The vinyl community has some strong opinions on it.

It doesn't even devalue it really. If anything, I'd argue you get special value by dumping something like that. What do people care about more, the fact that there's a game you can't play, or the fact a "hero" bought and dumped and preserved a game

Unfortunately this isn't true. The moment something is dumped the value drops like a rock. Obviously hoarding fucking sucks and infuriates the preservationist in me, but I hear this "it doesn't change the value" thing a lot and it just doesn't reflect reality.

I used to be into the proto collecting/preserving scene. Any time something gets dumped and resold, interest in the original is significantly reduced. A lot of hoarders get off on the fact that they have something nobody else has. Their interest/money vanish the moment the ROM is out in the wild.

This is even more true for optical media, since most devs used (cheaper) unbranded media when they burned playtesting/review copies. It's also really hard establishing chain of custody (i.e. it's impossible to know whether you're just buying the original developer's CDR/DVDR, or a copy).

If anything, by thinking it devalues it and acting on that info because you want it's value to hold in the long term, you are in theory lowering it's value to others in the long term, but not via sell price, but via how others feel about you

as someone who absolutely adores collecting videogames, I despise this sorta shit. We should never gatekeep people from being able to play a game just because it's rare. That's scummy as fuck. Games are for everyone, fuck these greedy bastards.
