Okay, so just a few* thoughts (*this got longer as I wrote 😅….long thread)-

Having a lot of thoughts & feelings today as someone who’s worked both on FBs misinfo interventions (back when they were making investments) and Birdwatch (pre-Musk Community Notes) 💔. Debating if a thread is worth the inevitable headache 😓

(1) As a number of former colleagues noted, BW/CN was NEVER intended to be a standalone misinfo intervention.

We always knew there would be high severity + high velocity misinfo where speed of ratings + likelihood of at least *some* cross-group agreement would be too low to label efficiently—we expected central labels from curation/3PFC to cover these.

BW was meant to cover the rest — the myriad of day-to-day misleading or misrepresented info that can impact views, that most people don’t actually WANT to accidentally share, but 3PFC don’t have capacity to rate/write for.

*To some ?s raised about how CN works without a robust 3PFC environ, most BW notes cite other news sources or primary sources, with fact check sources being rarer, IIRC.

(2) It is BANANAS and absolutely sloppy reporting to say Musk “accelerated” CN as NYT does. Reliance on the program? Sure. Was this met with any increase in resources? Not that I’ve heard. Rather, he pulled the rug out from under the program as it launched.

BW was possible as a program by EXTREMELY unique development circumstances. We were an incubator program, and had resources, focus, and runway unlike anything I’ve ever seen anywhere in tech.
