I think that creating 2D games has a lower barrier-of-entry, which allows smaller teams to express greater creativity. Plus, there are more of them with a wider variety. Because of that, they seem to be more tailored to one’s individual interests and allow for deeper connections.
Just finished playing Secret of Mana from SNES with my two children, and had a blast! There were real quirks with the old English translations, but gameplay was great!
My theory: camera control is a big subconscious part of this. Much simpler in 2D, took ages to improve in 3D. Mario 64 graphics are now charming but camera remains clunky, compare to the excellent Mario 3D World camera that you don’t even think about.
Probably because you have quite a long period where they were still figuring 3D out and pushing old systems resulting in poor performance. Took a while before we got quality 3D with good performance.
