Been thinking about laptops recently, I know a majority of people do but I honestly have a hard time understanding how anyone lives out of one. Though living out of phones is the more existentially fraught part for me. Like, with laptops its just a keyboard and a monitor, of course you can get used to its still a PC under the hood-

Always sad to see the cute little pink acer aspire one I found at a thrift store just rot in my shelf being cute but like, even if it could run any OS well, which it doesnt*, like....what would I use it for???

*netbook curse ofc but also, this is the fate of all laptops, netbooks just have it worse

Anyway godspeed to the warriors putting up with these locked down, non-modular slabs. Even in the best, most right to repair framework scenarios I don't think you can get away from the nature of it, but that's the portability tradeoff.

But if I'm gonna be sat at home plugged in 24/7...

I feel you, never needed one apart from when I lacked the budget to have my own desktop.

Never gone back since, don’t get why people still use em

Also some desktops exist in ATX formats now so easier to transport (a hell of a lot more expensive)

When I used to live at like 3 different places at once i appreciated the portability. (College dorm, gf's place, my place). If you don't need to travel with your stuff then desktop is the better option.

Having lived with both at various points in my life, laptops are awkward and awful to be stuck with and after 2 years+ now I am going to collapse weeping with joy the day I'm somewhere where I can set up a proper desktop again.

God I can only imagine, definitely see the use but for at home daily driving it feels like a compromise you put up with until you have the means to set up a proper desktop.

Hopefully the day comes sooner than later 😭

Most of my working life i had laptops, I found them limiting compared to a desktop. Only reason i had laptops was to travel with. Crappy small screen, shitty tiny keyboard, no numeric pad, crook neck from using it on a table, or burnt thighs from using it on your lap. I did always carry a mouse.

I have a Microsoft surface so it's even less than a regular laptop though it's a powerful beast. But I have a doc at home and work I use. So I just content the USB-C cable and get my dual monitors and charging and everything. So it's the desktop experience but I can also take it with me as needed.

At home I use a big screen and a full size keyboard. Plugged into my laptop. But I can always yank the USB-C to the dock and take the laptop to another room or whatnot.

Every so often I think I can work on a laptop. And then I try it and it’s like making thanksgiving dinner in a hotel room. Sure, you can do it, but my god it’s so inefficient.
