All the bad ideas of conservatism that he still supports are what led to this moment we're in. His ideology is literally why we don't have nice things right now. You can't be against Frankenstein's monster but love Dr. Frankenstein himself.
I’m opposed to conservatism but that is not what led to this moment we are in. Far left extremists that voted for Jill Stein instead of Hillary Clinton in 2016 are what led to this moment.
Conservatives supporting Trump is why Trump won, actually. And people like Kinzinger are responsible for creating the party that elevated Trump in the first place. We can't afford this myopia that focuses on a handful of fringe weirdos over the actual party of fascists wielding power.
That right there is the absolute worst and most terrifying thing about the Trump years. It's not the MAGA cult, that part is easy to understand. There have been cults since we learned to walk upright.
It's all the people who said fuck it, let's go along with the cult for our own gain.
"The base" are republicans too. That's how democracy works. They chose their leader. Yes, a small number of people at the top didn't initially support Trump, because he represents them losing control of what they created. That doesn't absolve them from creating it in the first place.
And I don't think people like him deserve forgiveness without repentance. They created this monster, and unless they fully accept responsibility for it, we're only setting ourselves up for failure again. People like him can and will create another Trump. I don't want that. Do you?
cool, I agree, but you're not talking about Kinzinger, he's very open about how his actions led to this and his consequent particular responsibility now to fight against it
No, not really. He still believes in the myth the the GOP can be redeemed, that this is just a misstep. He does not accept and understand that this isn't an aberration or bug, it's a feature. This is the natural end result of his "true conservatism". It always comes to this.
Except this rightward fascist trend isn't just happening in America, it's happening all over the world. Trump is a symptom, not a disease. The disease is conservatism.
What I KNOW is that Trump made inroads with many of our key historical constituents this time around. Stein votes didn’t mean shit and definitely would not have impacted the outcome to the point of Harris winning.
Is that to imply that leftists caused the first loss? Those left of center historically suck at turning out in general, too. While I can agree that a vote for Stein is foolish, is there a breakdown that proves votes for Stein reallocated to Clinton means she wins votes she otherwise lost?
There are lot of reasons we can’t have nice things. Failure to understand what this election was about, and letting propaganda do the thinking—yep, that’s a big part of it.
