Some areas can be traced back to efforts in mathematical psychology to understand human cognition. Example: multidimensional scaling was invented by Shepard in the 50s to understand categorisation; method is the precursor to metric learning.
Since the 50s? Dunno. I'd probably start with early editions of Tom Mitchell's textbook, but surely there are people who study the history of ML? #MLsky
