I'm going to leave looking at social media tonight ... but my final thoughts are just absolute fury at complacent Americans who didn't vote for Trump apologising for what was obviously going to happen if he gained power. You didn't do enough to convince your fellow Americans not to vote for him.

But there was an opportunity around 1989 where they could have, as the victors of the Cold War, stepped up and solidified the rule of "liberal" democracy.
