They really don't. They know how much is reported to them, and that's it. They don't know if you've had kids or gotten married. They don't know if you did a cash only side hustle, they don't know a lot of stuff. And they tend to work with folks if mess ups happen.
A lot of stuff people take for granted are funded with that money. Like the ability for aircraft to communicate and find each other through radar and communication systems that dot the landscape that the FAA maintain.
Taxes are an expression of collective will, as intrinsically democratic as voting, they are the magic that creates the world we dream of. Long live the IRS! π«‘
Tl;Dr Intuit is the company behind TurboTax tax and they lobby hard to make US tax code BS for average citizens. According to the IRS's own statements they want to just send a bill to every American, but that tanks Intuit's whole business model. https://directfile.irs.gov/
The other thing to remember is the IRS can kind of see most of everything you get. Banks are required to transmit information on transactions above a certain value already. By giving them the mandate they can go to the rich and tell them how much they owe and require them to fight it on the back end
The silly thing is, the thing most people are complaining about, like potholes and local problems, some cities give companies like Amazon a special zero or low taxes clauses to encourage them to build in their cities and bring jobs.
To be honest. Its not paying taxes what angers me. What does anger me is seeing the government waste the money I pay them on stupid shit. Meanwhile roads have holes in them and schools are falling appart.
how they gonna take this much of my money and the roads are still shit and there's still hungry kids in my neighborhood. that's not what i signed up for????

So go out there and fucking gett'em!
I am perfect. Self actualized.
Give us something good, like free blowup miku hatsune sex dolls!
The IRS has wanted to automate tax filing for simple 1040 taxpayers for YEARS, but tax prep lobbying keeps it from happening.
The other commenter is right. Intuit is your enemy.
Same!
Even when I fucked up my taxes, the IRS mails me, tells me, explains why/how, and how much I owe
And as long as I pay something consistently, they dgaf how long I pay it. And the interest is near pennies on the dollar
I owed once 3k, and 3 yrs later owed about 200 in interest
