Most recent survey shows only 39% of Germans want Taurus to be delivered so denying it is likely benefitting Scholz. I never said Taurus would de-escalate or that opposing its delivery was populist. Still think it would have been the right thing to do though.

Why advocate for its delivery? Isn’t de-escalation our main goal? I believe the chancellor knows more about the potential consequences than those outraged at Scholz. No weapon system can stop Ukraine from likely losing territory.

Depends on what you mean by de-escalation. The Budapest Memorandum hat the goal to deescalate. in its course Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons and in return was guaranteed independence and sovereignty. The signee that got the nukes now raided Ukraine while the others hold back on assured support. 1/2

In that regard I find it cynical to talk about "de-escalation" when what is means is looking the other way and let Putin get on with it. Had we given Ukraine the necessary support from the beginning they could go into real negotiations. Now its not even clear if Putin is going to take a deal at all.

It’s cynical not to discuss de-escalation. Dwelling on past inaction isn’t constructive. Thousands die daily. If more weapons led to peace, I’d support it, but Ukraine’s withdrawal from some regions seems inevitable and better than losing hundreds of thousands more lives.

I’m clear on the aggressor, but how can this war end if we keep fueling it with money and weapons? The approach seems inconsistent since no NATO country wants direct involvement. It’s ironic that advocates for arms often oppose aiding migrants or providing public services - see glorified CDU 2/2
