it’s called resistance for a reason
but exercise has never been my forte
and i’m afraid when the going gets tough
i hide under weighted blankets and doom scrolling

i want to stand in front of tanks and guns and welcome consequences
with open arms
but every time i lift the truth
my arms wobble
and my breath stutters
why isn’t this easier
this exercise in justice
why isn’t this easier
this training to be a better person
for a better world
and i’m wheezing under the weight of
hopelessness and despair
under the weight of fear for my daughter
under the weight of fear for my neighbor
and the energy it takes
to find bravery amidst the lure of sand
than go against the tide
and i prefer to eat my feelings
than run the marathon
and i’m scared about what that says about me
and communities for panic attacks
and i have to remember to use both if i care at all about surviving
justice can be practiced
hate can be endured
as long as we are together
because i’d rather face tanks and guns
in a body that’s been preparing
than under a weighted blanket
all alone
