That’s actually learning the useful lesson: denazification was quick &
hurt only a handful compared to the costs of not participating in the regime predating it.
I’ve read this 20 years ago, I should probably reread it. I didn’t pay much attention to it then, but written in 1929, it regards the rise of facism is Germany as pretty done deal. Yet many were surprised in 1933. Something about hindsight and/or wanting to ignore bad news etc etc.
