He's shocked to hear Ren speak of him fondly, wistfully. He expects anger. The lingering resentment at his betrayal even after their temporary reunion during third semester.

Instead, Ren describes him more faithfully than anyone has, eulogizing him like he genuinely saw him as a friend.
