The Rorschach, scored with the Exner system, and compared to decades' worth of normative research, lies in a space between art and science--yes, the complexity lowers the reliability, and without reliability there cannot be validity. But... 2/

The Rorschach does something no questionnaire can do: Instead of asking "What do you think about yourself?" it asks the client to "Show me how you think!"

An assessment which includes both projectives and objective data is rich, indeed, and I often find they support each others' results. 3/

But, along with the diminished reliability caused by its complexity, there's questions about how up to date the normative data is--basically, too much of the Rorschach is based on data drawn from before the internet was such a big deal. And before the cards were available as throw pillows from Etsy

The Rorschach will never stand up in court, nor should it. But as a sample of how someone thinks--how they build their perceptions and interpretations of the world around them--there's little to compare to it. It takes an hour to administer, at least as long to score, longer still to interpret...

...unless you have really good and tragically dated software the way I do (may Philip Caracena, author of the Ror-Scan software, rest in peace--we lost a keen mind and a dry sense of humour when we lost him!)...but when it's the right tool for the job, it's great to use those old skills.
