It all takes local pressure. In Quebec City where more thn 70% of trips are 5 KM or less (and 55% are a stunning 1 KM or less) there are citizen campaigns to improve cycling infrastructure and public transit. A new network of e-bikes has made a huge difference 6 months of the year.

This tallies with my experience. I've had people on their phones drift into me in the cycle lane telling me to f- off after I knocked on their window to warn them that they were endangering me. Utter, instant rage.

When I'm driving, if I fuck up, my instant reaction is to be very apologetic. I feel like we need to study the people who become violent after they almost kill someone.

It's worst when I'm moving faster on two wheels than those on four: the cognitive dissonance between the advertising myth of car autonomy and the reality of congestion. I think cars make most of us more psychopathic. Plus the disinhibition of being sealed away from others.

Je suis not surprised at all.

After spending years commuting in Toronto by car and putting up with the BS, I can’t imagine being a cyclist.

Now when I go into the city, I stick religiously to public transit (as mediocre as it is).

Toronto drivers are increasingly full of themselves.

I believe it. The # of times I got yelled at by drivers for simply being on the road, which was my right...

I'm astonished I never got hit - although one time a car was within inches of me even though there was NO other traffic on the road, so they either didn't see me, or it was deliberate. Scary.
