I definitely remember Spore (Will Wright) and Black & White (Peter Molyneux) being talked about in the same articles within the same genre of “weird games from big publishers”. EA also published both titles and I’m sure Molyneux would have at least had thoughts on Spore in some games mag interview.

The way spore was marketed and handled is pretty much like every Molyneux game, which is him saying a lot of grand shit and kinda getting a middling turd at the end of it. It is about as him of a game you can get without the him in it.

Pretty sure that was never the case! I was obsessed by that era of Peter Molyneux (I was literally a staff writer for GameSpy about his game Black & White!) - and also followed Spore avidly. I think it's just simply that Will Wright was the other big auteur sim game dev of the time!

Molyneux was often mentioned in reports about Spore at the time as a kind of forefather of the genre (bc some ppl thought Spore would have been the first game of that kind). Perhaps you mix that up with the fact that he coyld have been involved, since it looks a lot like him? Just a guess. ;)

Never heard he was involved, but I remember his games had a hype again, bc of ppl wanting more of the same kind through Spore in that time, too. Totally get why you think so, though. Maybe you're right? xD

I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that Spore would have been spoken about in A LOT of the same contexts as Black & White - ESPECIALLY regarding games that were promising the moon (and to a lot of people didn't deliver)

It may be that your mind is mixing the two together because they both overpromised and under-delivered. Spore marketing really pulled a Molyneux.
