oh both, it has barely anything left of the original story, but also enough that all of the changes to it make no sense and don't seem to have considered the ramifications for characterisation, motivations or story. Even basic things like Kiryu taking the rap for Nishiki just don't make sense.

I watched a friends playthrouh the game after I dropped it, and it only reinforced what I didn't like about the game's story from the outset. One good scene at the end doesn't forgive how pointless the rest of the game feels, especially seeing how literally nothing matters in the following game.

In fact, I think finishing Infinite Wealth completely soured me on the whole "Man who erased his name" storyline of the last few game's. I already didn't like them dragging Kiryu back out immediately after the fantastic passing of the torch in 7, but then IW just didn't even need him.

It was weird. They changed the story to make it much less interesting, and the non-linearity was annoying. Also the tone was way off. Also no karaoke. I mean come on. The only thing they got right was making Majima the most entertaining character and doing nothing with him. Just like the games.

LAD seems like a very tough property to adapt tbh. So much of the game experience comes from hanging out in Kamurocho - to the point that the prequel was the origin story for the iconic building moreso than the players.

Take that feeling away, and you have a subpar Yakuza movie at best

It's a bad show. It deviates so far from the source material it's a shock it's called the same thing. When we discover that Kiryu and Nishki HATE Kazama, I needed to know what this show turns into.

I think I saw someone mentioned that there's a deleted scene of the actor playing Kiryu singing Baka Mitai. Knowing that is a deleted scene told me enough about the direction of this series and how little they understood the source material.

Dragon of domination isn’t a title kiryu got for having a dragon tattoo and just being a badass under dojima. Now it’s a specific title the champion of an underground fight league run by the yakuza has. Kiryu saw him as a kid and decided he wanted to be the dragon.
