Electing judges is not great but I can tolerate it since every system is bad for some reason. Reëlecting judges is much worse. I simply don't trust them not to decide matters based on the poll numbers. But there's no such concern with the initial election since they have no power to abuse yet.

I'm not sure what a perfect system would be. I think a combination of initially appointed but subject to a super majority recall maybe? Or maybe with limited terms?

There is no perfect system. But pure judicial elections is the worst.

I think we could find worse. What about sortition, like with juries? Pick judges randomly on a case-by-case basis.

Or maybe that's actually better?

I've seen this plan for legislatures, which is where I got the idea, but never judges.
