A case in point is Thomas Cochrane, after the actions at Rosas, being free to admit to Collingwood that he essentially usurped command.

Cochrane almost literally tells Collingwood that "you told us to fuck the French up so I did it regardless" and knows Collingwood will have his back.

There's arguably a more valuable leadership lesson in how Collingwood commands after Trafalgar than Nelson.

He has to renew a badly mauled fleet, that's just lost its talismanic commander, in the middle of a war where failure means invasion.

At death, he leaves behind a fleet stronger than before.
