Continuing the conversation, although algorithms silo people into their own tastes, that gives even more social cachet to people who can introduce you to new things. And algorithms tend to recommend artists, not individual songs - the kids who "know" music still get mad respect for it.

Britpop is having a bit of a thing right now, so them being able to say "so what's your favourite Oasis song?" and then putting their mate onto another song from the era with similar vibes is going a long way. As is the ability to say "load of shite, try this..."

I think there’s so much music out there. Pub quiz the other night, and it’s *me* who gets that the snippet is Lizzo, not my early 20s quite-musical kid who listens to other stuff

Also, streaming services like Spotify hide away *when* the music was made. It’ll auto-play something 10, 20 years older. So young people coming new to music don’t have a chronology that they can slot a song into.
