One of the most memorable figures from my Prom performances. He was unflamboyant, and when it sounded as if we were applauding him too much afterwards he would always hold the score up.

In his fifth and last recording of the Planets, in 1978 at age 90, we hear the truth of Saturn's "old age".

Yes watching him on video - sadly I never saw him live he uses what seems the minimum of effort but to such effect - his book the point of the stick explains it all - use the wrist (oh and a few wound rubber bands around the baton)

Yes, Boult was a major interpreter. He championed overseas composers as well, notably Busoni. He performed Mahler when it was unfashionable. His approach to Schumann was an alternative to the sluggish accounts often heard. His Schubert 9th was one of the greats. Top Beethoven, and Brahms.
