Maybe I’m too deep into broadway, but do you really think the average person doesn’t know it’s a musical? Like the trailer is full of all the songs from the show??
Very surprised to hear it's a two-parter though. Boo. This plus the "distracting overacting" vibes from the trailer (maybe it's just me) make me consider skipping part 1 until part 2 is out. May just come down to a careful read of the reviews.
There's a scene in the trailer where Ariana Grande picks up a pink sphere from a crate in the most "I'm about to launch into song" gesture ever, so I'm going to side with Universal on that point.
Moreover, given how Wicked is structured, I'm betting a lot of people who weren't previously familiar with the broadway musical, are going to love the first part and *hate* the 2nd part.
Theater is where a bummer ending will be received better, since the cast will come out and take a bow after closing a frame around the narrative (c.f. Little Shop of Horrors). Also Wicked needs to serve as a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, in which Elphaba meets a bad end and accomplishes nothing.
I don't think it's asking very much for the stuff the Wicked Witch does after Act 1 and before she fakes her death to maybe be more exciting and memorable, is the main point.
