Interesting. Is such observable outgroup avoidance perhaps more common in media precisely because people are much more likely to encounter outgroup members or their communications in social media etc. than face-to-face?

I think that is right; a pre-condition for avoidance is the potential for ongoing exposure. But I would say there is evidence from offline contexts for avoidance as well:
