They didn’t exempt themselves from the ACA. GOP proposed an amendment to kick Congress off FEHB and force them onto the exchanges. It was a ploy to paint Democrats as hypocrites because they expected them to balk (“oh no, we don’t want to put ourselves on the same level as our constituents”). 1/
But Dems said “GREAT IDEA!!” and that amdt made it into the final bill, kicking all of Congress off FEHB. They’re getting some loopholes, but Republicans really shot themselves in the face with that one.
All that to say this: I hope they figure out a way to shoot themselves in the face again. 😂😂😂
The phrase is "shoot themselves in the foot." It was a way to get out of military service by causing a disability but thought to be an unfair tradeoff because now you have no foot.
I recently learned that congress decided they deserve the same retirement pensions as FF, Police, Air Traffic Control etc. one side puts their lives at risk, which do you think deserves the richer pensions
Congressmen get FAR higher pensions than any of the retired firefighters in my family. Congressional pensions are based on length of service + avg of highest 3 yrs salary. (Min. congressional salary = $174K. Avg firefighter pay of $40-60K.) Congressmen are eligible for pension after 5 yrs of service
They do. calculations are the same but congress loves that high base pay and voting for raises. firefighters base pay is much lower. something about that is very wrong. There is a special higher percentage Firefighters get as a risk premium that somehow congress believes they should too.
My dad was forced out as Battalion Chief after 25 years of service. Pension was so low he went back to work as a school custodian so he could qualify for Social Security benefits.

They don't give a fuck about retirement benefits or salaries.
