A bit anthropomorphic, but this #humpback sure seems to be expressing #joy. #BlueSkyArtShow #photography #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #wildlife #whale #Alaska

Doing what comes naturally is a pleasure for all creatures, I think the whales do this to knock off barnicles, parasites, but agree the whale is really enjoying it.
So.... when humans pick off ticks it's not an expression of intelligent behavior? We're all animals. The idea of "lower creatures" and "animals have no souls" was a rationalization to justify mistreating them. (IMO if they have no souls, it's worse.)
Was this by any chance in Skagway and seen from a docked cruise ship? We had one that played like this right nexe to our ship for hours two summers ago.
Those who sneer at "anthropomorphism" are the kind of folks who would like to forget that H."sapiens" is just another (extremely destructive) variety of chimpanzee. We share over 90% of our DNA with our Bonobo cousins.
Anybody who thinks animals don't feel joy doesn't know much about animals.
I completely agree that animals can feel joy. I recognize it in my cat all the time. My only question is if I am correctly interpreting this whale's action.

Of course animals feel joy - as anyone who loves a pet can verify 🙂

We're not superior. Only different. Whales are not destroying the planet we all need to live on.
