When Britain Brexited, it tried, very consciously, to pull Ireland out of Europe along with it. It tried to force an open border, with checks then on Irish goods going to Europe. It would have been the slow death of the economy and sovereignty.

This, unfortunately, is the choice now facing Brexit Britain, as Trump will inevitably try to pull the UK out of Europe's orbit.

All that Trump is offering is for things to stay as bad as they are and not get worse.
That is not an attractive bargain.
& UK tried to throttle the land-bridge after the TCA was signed in order to squeeze Ireland (to apply pressure with a view to softening the NI-related provisions of the WA/TCA).
Meanwhile Brexiters still tout this UK-Morocco service.

That we only had faux independence.
Thankfully with the backing of the entire membership of our EU, we left them to their own devices.
Even in British law, Ireland is defined as not foreign.
