By law, military regulations, & longstanding custom, senior U.S. military officers are barred from displaying partisan fealty, & such displays should not be basis for promotions. The idea is that the military (or its nonpartisan officers) should decide based on their missions, not Dem or Repub [5/5]

Precipitating incident likely the mass protests over George Floyd. Trump wanted the military to shoot protesters--like the Egyptian military did around 2012. Brown and Milley refused. Keeping the military out of domestic repression -- has a long history -- because of risk of backfiring big time.

(continued) Sooner or later the soldiers refuse to shoot people protesting on the street -- because these people include their friends and family. At that point the soldiers shoot their officers instead--as happened in Iran in 1979. And--when that happens--all hell breaks loose.
