I remember being surprised that I laughed at literally every line because I'm usually the one that doesn't find things funny that most people do.
And then of course there was "Keep it straight if you can"
Honestly, as a history buff, it was mostly funny to count as many historical inaccuracies as I could - there were a few...😂
But truly, I absolutely LOVED it. And I have two "Oh" moments: Seeing everyone's flag flying and-somewhat unimaginatively, but WHOLLY accurately: "You Wear Fine Things Well."
Very late to the game. My Pilot moment was probably realising oh, that’s Rhys Darby! But it really nailed it for me with ‘My name’s Stede, I’ll be your robber here today.’
I saw a gif on tumblr and I thought, eh. Why not. I was expecting to be queer baited again so it took me until the drum beats (you know the ones) to get super hopeful. And then! The kiss! Ahhh~ and from there? Obsession like a slow consuming fire.
I didn't have HBO at that time. Mutuals had been raving about the show. I had major surgery 4/30/22. On 5/3/22, a friend loaned me his HBO for 2 weeks while I was recovering. I now cosplay Stede and Ed, read tons of fics, buy merch, raise funds. Pirate family & fan for life. #OurFlagTurns3
I'd heard so much about the show already by the time the BBC screened it. Seeing the episodes properly I knew everyone was right about how great it was. And having been a teenage Blackadder fan in the 1980s I felt OFMD was a descendent of Blackadder but was completely unlike anything else I'd seen.
The flags at the end of the pilot!! And Stede’s little panic attacks, the crafternoon session, him reading the crew stories, the flashbacks to his life with his family, and the way the crew all come together to get the British off their ship! Cheering for Stede to hit Nigel with the whale!!
I remember seeing it in the lineup on M*x, and I thought it looked like a silly show I'd be interested in. Honestly, OFMD had me at:
1717. The Golden Age of Piracy.
Wealthy landowner Stede Bonnet set out to find adventure and renown on the high seas.
Talk it through as a crew and Rhys’s delivery as a disappointed teacher annoyed that his students still haven’t gotten it after he’d taught it 100 times had me howling and I knew I’d love the show forever 😂

Things did not go as planned...
