To a degree the instructors do hold responsibility for encouraging students to invest in their education and future, but this responsibility is also reliant on the student's caregivers and how they framed the importance of education to their child throughout their development.

There are more contextual factors that effect this, but I feel these 2 can largely contribute in how much a student will be willing to invest in their education.

You can encourage a student to invest in their education as much as possible, but when they have to choose between eating everyday and investing in one's future because of a lack of access financial support or resources, it can become a non-option.

I’ve always told my students that food, friends, sleep, and rent come first. Can’t get a degree if you’re hungry, tired, lonely, or insecure.

It's hard these days, especially when the scholarships and financial aid students do get, no longer cover the cost of tuition. There were many times during my own degrees where I had to choose to pay tuition or choose to get groceries.
