Today, gently contemplating a family doctor who hasn't the slightest idea what the criteria is for an autism diagnosis. It's a sensory and social communication difference, Doc. We didn't get a diagnosis for 'misbehaving'.
Sigh.

He claims that one gets diagnosed autistic by seeming 'rude' & 'disrespectful', which he says is actually caused by bad parenting.
In reality, most autistic children are better behaved than their peers.
Referring to this as a parental fault to be corrected by instilling discipline is bizarre.
This isn't 1945.
We know better.

Is there guidance for how to transform some ill-informed Doctors into ones who would like to listen, care, show compassion, and be an ally to exhausted families & children, instead?

Other possibilities exist, e.g. PDA, or response to trauma, or underlying anxiety/depression etc.
Never assume that distress behaviour = autism/bad parents.
because cotillion TOTALLY isn't a concept from a sexist ableist classist racist society and it totally didn't make me hyper aware of how I'm perceived to the point that phone calls give me function freeze.
But I can tie a tie!
AND THERE'S THAT HYPER AWARENESS OF PERCEPTION

Fail to recognise this difference (as was common for my generation) and you condemn us to an awful life.
(Based on my small sample size of 4 AuDHD children and an AuDHD me).
Disrespectful.
He talks back.
Sighs … I have so many questions
I was a model student. I didn't get the help or diagnosis I needed. I suffer suicidal ideation. This is what not having a timely diagnosis does to us.
To parents, I say if your child has the opportunity to have an assessment, take it!
