The teams recommend how to prepare a room and the staff, before using ABA methods to stop autistic children showing distress/overwhelm.
They refer people to another paper by Helvey & team (2024) which shows the recommended stuff.

Think about your own child in a moment of distress.
What did they need? Love, comfort, kind words, listening, caring?
Autistic children get this example, turning up in the room./
Thank you for the good work you do highlighting this.
Glad to do what I can to retrieve this stuff from behind paywalls and find out what this industry is recommending to its staff.
People need to know accurate information, so they can make proper judgements on what's right for their young child.
Think about your own child when they were angry and upset. What did they need? /
Ours get a padded cell and those enforcers turning up.
Are you beginning to understand why ABA isn't appropriate?
Something hurts and you are scared and desperate for it to stop.
And you don't know how to ask.
So they put you in that room and lock the door.
And into the room comes a team dressed like....that...
How do you feel?
Are you going to be able to learn?
Are you going to build trust and relationship with adults?
What is this doing to the child, apart from making them sit still and quiet on command, no matter how much distress they're in?
So, in a way, I'm glad that this paper has set it out so clearly.
Choose kind, caring approaches instead, please.
Ask the autistic specialists and our allies for their wise advice.
#BetterWaysThanABA
couldn't imagine it as a kid; what i did get via ignorance was bad enough, and this is direct, intentional harm to autistic kids
(As bad as my childhood was, sometimes I'm glad I only got the dx as an adult, especially if similar treatment would have been the alternative 😬)
