UPDATE: I don’t know who animated the beginning scene but this particular shot was allegedly animated by Art Davis himself. Some other shots in the toon (and in a few other toons) also have these cylinder teeth in ‘em
1. I love whoever they got to do the vocal effects for the captain
2. The early sound cartoons that the Harrison-Gould studio done while they were still located in New York City are a delight! And the fact that we know a whole lot about the staff who done them (even I&P & Camera) is a godsend!!!
At least the NYC staffers. (Guys like Shamus Culhane, Dave Tendlar, Harry Love, Al & Ira Gould & Bernie Wolf amongst others. Shamus & Dave also assisting the main animators, Al & Ira not only being relatives of Manny Gould but were cel painters, and Harry Love being Friz Freleng’s assistant!)
Sid Marcus was also apart of their staff around 1928 but somewhere inbetween there, he left to do work at Fleischer.
That being said… only the key staff (Ben, Manny and his brothers, Art, Allen, & Harry) moved to California with Charles Mintz & Jimmy Bronis. All the other staff were left behind.
The amount of ideas put into just these 30 seconds is incredible. A really great example of how creatively compact a lot of shorts from this period are!
