(1) Something funny. The weather is bleak. The world has gone to hell in a handbag. My chronic illness is at war with itself. So, I'd love a laugh. Funny words. Funny characters. Funny situations. Or pieces that use humour as a lens to approach something more serious.

(2) Memorable characters. Everyone is extraordinary in their own way, but I always love reading about the oddballs and the outcasts, characters who do things their own way and are completely different from anyone else.

(3) Unexpected forms. Lists. Recipes. School reports. Letters. Erasure micros. Shape poems. Can you approach a story in a different way? Can you use an unusual form in a way that cohesively fits with character and story?

(4) Something historical. I always love seeing a new perspective on the past. This is tough within the constraints of just 100 words when there's so little room for world-building, but you can always use the title to do some of the heavy-lifting.

(5) Something speculative. Fantasy, sci-fi, dystopia, re-imagined fairytales. It feels like there is so much potential to use the speculative to hold a mirror up to the world and explore a deeper truth.
