I think there’s always room for new generations to discover music from earlier decades. I’m a Gen Y/Z cusper and I first heard R.E.M. on Sesame Street when I was about 3 or 4 and have loved them ever since. Fleetwood Mac gained new listeners through TikTok. Kate Bush through Stranger Things.

Not to go on a tangent, but Sesame Street has been a great outlet for getting toddlers into good music for over 50 years. James Taylor. Johnny Cash. Destiny’s Child. The Four Tops. Paul Simon. Stevie Wonder. Feist. Many kids probably first heard those artists from watching the show.

I believe R.E.M. will endure. The Beatles have remained consistently popular for 60+ years. Same with The Rolling Stones and The Temptations and Bob Dylan. R.E.M. is one of those seminal legends.
