I've seen all but one of the Best Picture nominees, and I promise this is neither a Complaint nor a Take but they are a pretty bleak bunch.

I hasten to add: art about misery, narratives without happy endings, etc., are no less great, and in fact they tend to give me hope (not that they need to).
