We have a verdict! After more than 6 hours and 100+ public comments, Menlo Park CC voted to issue the RFQ, allowing developers to submit proposals!

They punted on the surplus land declaration, which could cause problems down the road, but I'm taking this as a win for now!

Kudos to the staff. I don't remember his name, but the staff member initially presenting actually raised this as a possibility. I think the staff knew that the council might chicken out and wanted to give them a way out that would at least keep the ball rolling.

I wonder if it'd be useful to follow up with the pro-parking folks who suggested building in civic center and get them to actually put a detailed proposal on the table (IIRC, they volunteered to do this free of charge).

Like, I'd _rather_ we have parks than parking. But housing is still housing.

Same thing happened at another south bay city's council mtg I was at a few months ago.
Gotta say, I don't get it. Is it all just performative democracy, or are minds actually being changed at the meeting? idk

Your live-posting was the best. If someone like you were doing this at Berkeley City Council meetings, I might be able to follow along. As it is, the comments are so weird/confusing/depressing it's hard to stay engaged.

Very impressed with the decision. I read the entire thread and I’m here to say this exact theme in public comment takes place in city halls coast to coast.

The supporters with sensible arguments and detractors with their “give me liberty or give me death” even if they’re commenting on roll carts.

They're delusional if they think the developers are going to provide replacement parking. Palo Alto's two respondents told the city they couldn't provide replacement parking AND they needed the land for free AND they need a financial contribution from the city.
