nooby question, biomass are renewable, but are they clean? if i remember my high school chemistry correctly burning hydrocarbon, if im not mistaken, largely makeup biomasses, produces carbon dioxide. or bio electricity matrix style? what even are these biomasses in particular? wood? cattle poop gas?

Thanks. Here, biomass comprises both bio gas (e.g. from corn) and solid biomass (e.g. wood). It is "clean" in the sense that the CO2 that is released when you burn it has been captured from the atmosphere before by the plant. But it may come with other issues (intensive farming, biodiversity etc.)

Bio waste releases methane, if not incinerated but transormed by natural anaerobic digestion. Controlled digestion or incineration is better than allowing natural processes, which were developed by mother Nature to increase CO2 level in atmosphere (to prevent iceing).

Not really a fan of calling that clean energy. Carbon sinks are only sinks for as long as they remain. If the carbon isn't captured, it's not any cleaner than fossil fuels.

The tech just is not ready yet. So far, nobody managed to retrieve more energy from a fusion reaction than was put into it.
The laser fusion only had a surplus because they only counted the energy emitted by the laser is input, not the total consumption of the laser.

Lignite is a soft type of coal that is, still mined in the Eastern part of Germany. Was a huge employer.
These are open-pit mines that obliterate the landscape, so it is a controversial industry.
We are never going to run out of fossil fuel but it's killing us.

The UK made a huge switch from Coal to Gas in the 1980s because the Conservative government were trying to take power away from the coal miners trade union. The last Coal fired power station was switched off in 2024.

Your assumption is not correkt:
Wind (onshore) alone produced MORE electricty (114.2 TWh) than hard coal and lignite combined (105.4 TWh).

In the last 3 years electricity production from coal reduced from 180 TWh to 105 TWh (by 41%).

I'm having mixed feelings about biomass. Plants require a lot of space to grow, space that should be used to feed *humans.* I'm not sure using the limited fertile land we have to feed our cars and cities is the most… ethical and efficient way to generate power.

Just reduce meat consumption and there will be plenty of food for everyone and land for biomass too. Now unfortunately much soy, maize, potatoes and seeds are used as feed, which is very inefficient as most of the calories are lost and just some are stored as muscles and fat on the animals.
