2/ 🏆 In 2024, there were 457 hours with negative electricity prices - a new all-time record and >50% more than 2023. And this even without the usual end-of year peak. In other words, in 5% of all hours of the year, you could have earned money by buying electricity on the day-ahead wholesale market.

3/ Negative price levels were mostly moderate. Around half of these hours have seen only slightly negative price levels between 0 and -2€/MWh. Only 27 hours were below -50€/MWh, the minimum was -135€/MWh.

4/ ⌛ Most negative price events lasted a few hours. The longest consecutive events was 18 hours with negative prices in a row (actually not a record - 2023 has seen 36 consecutive hours with neg. prices)

5/ 🕛 Over the course of the day, there was a clear peak around noon. This is because many negative price events were related to the largely uncontrolled feed-in of rooftop PV systems. In previous years, when less PV capacity was installed in 🇩🇪 , negative prices were less concentrated at midday.

6/ ☀️ During hours of negative prices, mainly solar PV has been producing electricity in 2024. This is particularly true for deeply negative prices.

💡 So should we freak out about negative prices? Probably not. But should we care? Absolutely!

7/ Remember that negative prices are a sign of supply exceeding demand. While inflexibly operated conventional power plants have played an important role for the occurrence of negative prices in earlier years, rooftop PV systems are now clearly the dominating factor. ☀️
