I love these poems, not least because I had long been fascinated and appalled by the Poyais scheme that inspired them. The ghosts of Gregor MacGregor are indeed all around us now.

I wrote Cazique in the voice of a conman. Long after @longbarrowpress.bsky.social published it, I still had his voice in my head. The voice grew into voices. Now I hear those voices in rolling news. In parliament. In advertising. In briefings. I live in Conopolis.
