I just had a conversation about how relocating materials to another section to limit access is book banning and the student was surprised. They don’t support book banning, but only want children to have access to ‘appropriate’ materials🤦‍♀️

"Is it suitable for teenagers" and "is it allowed to appear in public" are two different questions, I think? I agree that the books given to students are screened, but "no distribution or publication" can easily be abused

Woah! I teach English and information literacy and haven’t seen this. I’m in FL where there has been mass book banning in K-12 schools so maybe my students have seen the negative impact of it. Banned books week in my library is very popular.

I’ve had 2 in the past week, which is alarming. I’m at a private academic library, so we aren’t banning books, but we are starting to see some student groups protesting banned book displays, events, etc. and researching about the benefits of book banning and defining ‘appropriate’ materials.

Oh wow! I'm also a librarian at a public state college so we have had to "minimize attention" to certain topics, but I've been carrying on with business as usual.
Does administration have your back or have students not gone to that level?

Our administration isn’t know for anticipatory obedience, so they’ve had our back so far. We’re in RI, so our state policies help.

If federal funding is threatened, I feel like that will change, though. There’s a lot of faculty self-censoring happening here right now.
