Really hope someone picks it up. It's too damn important to just drop like that. At a time when teaching children should be at the forefront, they do this.

Well, I don’t know what all you hear across the pond, but there is talk that the Department of Education is going to lose funding… and really anything that the right wing feel supports education that they don’t support (so truth, love, acceptance, actual history). 1/2
One hates to sound like a conspiracist, because that way lies the other side, but it certainly seems pertinent that it's happening at this moment in time. It feels like pre-emptive capitulation.
As you say, it's not just the purely educational aspects, but the feeling of inclusivity and family. Events do seem to suggest empathy is no longer welcome in the US, and I can't adequately put into words how nauseating that is.
