πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Lava fountaining & tephra production is spectacular, but many volcanologists study the ensuing lava flows, e.g., as in these Apr-25 #USGS visual & thermal #Kilauea #Hawaii images. Length, thickness, & texture of these viscous fluid flows reflect eruption/cooling conditions, composition & rate.

πŸ§ͺ🌊 My photo seems poignant to the coming #storm. #NOAA is THE major oceanography research funder at @urigso.bsky.social & many others. Massive cuts to 'align' w/ cheeto's philosophy, or support private industry alternates, or to save πŸ’°, are all dishonest & ruinous. www.science.org/content/arti...

πŸ§ͺOahu's 'freakosystems': "Deep in a #Hawaiian #forest, surrounded by tropical plants, are a warning from the future". www.bbc.com/future/artic... Captured this forest hiking spot a few yrs ago near my Oahu home. Don't know if any of these plants are native; but they're beautiful. Image link in ALT.

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Wait for it ... ( #USGS #kilauea #eruption time lapse): Only 9 of 31 hours of this episode (15) were high fountains, mostly from southern of 2 active vents. Volcanoes can be episodic on min. to yr. timescales. Since 23-Dec-24, we have seen 16 roughly day-long bursts w/ little action between.

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Powerful display: 200m high #lava fountain and 700m long lava flow from episode 16 of Kilauea summit eruption, 1-Apr-25, as seen from #USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory helicopter overflight. They report a 1.5β€―m-thick tephra blanket has formed near the vent since eruption beginning, 23-Dec-24.

πŸ§ͺ🌊I'm sad & dazed. US Fed agencies rightly backed broad science participants, perspectives, & access for 20 yrs. Now the educator in me wants to teach politicians not to defund that work using scientifically illiterate "DEI" keywords. Can we study ecosystems w/out diversity; data w/out bias checks?

πŸ§ͺ🌊 Despite the political chaos, Earth warms & seas rise. Satellite data show global #sealevel rising since 1993: higher than expected in 2024 (0.59 cm/yr vs. 0.43 cm/yr predicted), mostly due to excess ocean thermal expansion. The ocean are complicated. See NASA/JPL report in ALT text & below 1/2

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ #USGS HVO reported that Episode 16 of the ongoing HalemaΚ»umaΚ»u eruption at #Kilauea #volcano #hawaii began at 10:57 p.m. HST on 31 March 2025 with the start of lava overflowing from the north vent. Here are two live webcam views from 3 hours later. Mostly low fountains from the lava pond.

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ thats gassy. super high lava fountaining to 305 m (1000 ft) at Halemaβ€˜umaβ€˜u crater, #Kilaue #volcano, this week (26 Mar), during episode 15 of the ongoing eruption. Cumulatively, the eruption has produced quite a tephra blanket around the summit area since Dec 2024. #USGS photo.

πŸ§ͺπŸŒŠπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ #FieldPhotoFriday throwback. Nested sequence of drained, just erupted pillow lavas covered with co-erupted pyroclasts near West Mata submarine volcano summit, Tonga, 2017, from R/V Falkor on the #UnderwaterFire expedition I led for Schmidt Ocean Institute. schmidtocean.org/cruise/under...

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ ever feeling down under the flood of uneducated and anti science tripe coming from the cheeto and his clown show? Zen out to the live stream of #kilauea #volcano, brought to you by the good folks at #USGS. This is the 15th eruptive episode since Dec 2024 #usgs. www.youtube.com/live/Gd2Tm5j...

πŸ§ͺπŸŒŠπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Collection of #molten #lava in the deep sea (2009): 1st & only documented case, West Mata volcano, Tonga. Amazing research object. Rarer than a moon rock. Have the spectacular rock in my labβ€”both major US nat history museums declined display piece. #WHOI #ROVJason vid. youtu.be/nmSWuG-7b8w?...

πŸ§ͺ🌊 #Coastal oceans are givers of sustenance, beauty, & peace to much of 🌏🌍🌎 population. They're also a protective shield for natural hazards. . How to preserve & protect in environmentally sound ways is what coastal resilience #research is all about. At @urigso.bsky.social we ❀️ the littoral zone.

πŸ§ͺ🌊 How I and a lot of other #academic scientists feel after another hard week of harsh news from what feels like most anti-science/anti-people US gov't ever. Was part of a proposal review yesterday for a fed ocean agency: told "climate" & "wind" research is out. Let rest of 🌎 lead? #idiotsrule

πŸ§ͺπŸͺΈπŸŒŠ Ever wonder what it looks like "down there"? I shot this photo from the front porthole of the Pisces V submersible, looking at Pisces IV during rare two-sub operations in 2016 on drowned #Hawaiian Ice Age #coral reefs. Lighting is accurate. This is 180m deep, just shy of the "deep sea" at 200m.

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Sunrise over Haleakala ("House of the Sun") on Maui, seen from a remote, uninhabited, & seldom-visited spot on Kahoβ€˜olawe, Hawaiβ€˜i. Kahoβ€˜olawe bears a long & vexing history of Western misuse (see alt text). A great joy of this field scientist is my long list of unforgettable work locations.

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Powerful fire fountains from the 13th (latest) episode of active Kilauea volcanism in Hawaii, 11 Mar 2025, estimated to be about 50 m (160 ft) high. The #volcano has been #erupting intermittently in a series of short events since 23 Dec. 2024, tirelessly monitored by USGS with public funds.

πŸ§ͺ In Dec 2008 a group of us measured water column signals suggesting submarine eruption in Tonga: we convinced #NSF & #NOAA to fund a rapid response with #WHOI #ROVJason. In May 2009 we made the 1st & only obs of an active deep submarine eruption. Would discovery happen today under Trump/Musk? πŸŒŠπŸŒ‹

πŸ§ͺ Amazing 2-vent lava fountaining yesterday at #Kilauea #volcano. #USGS reports Episode 12 of the ongoing summit #eruption in HawaiΚ»i Volcanoes National Park ended at 10:37 a.m. HST on March 5, after 22 hours of activity. Original NPS video at: x.com/i/status/189...

πŸ§ͺπŸŒ‹βš’οΈ Pele's Hair, a delicate volcanic eruption product, is the topic of a recent Physics World podcast with myself & Prof. Tamsin Mather. My parts are the 1st 5 min, and 20:00 mark on. I also discuss Volcanoes in Hawaiian culture and exploring submarine volcanism. πŸ‘‚at physicsworld.com/a/threads-of...

πŸ§ͺβš’οΈπŸŒ‹ 180 m (600-foot) high lava fountains from the last day-long pulse ("episode 11") of the ongoing #eruption of #Kilauea #volcano, Hawaii, 26 Feb 2025, brought to you by the good folks at #USGS , who for now, still appear to be employed. I guess even πŸ›πŸ›πŸ› like volcanoes. Video source in Alt text.

πŸ§ͺ Here's some fun #science for #FossilFriday after a long, tough week for USA scientists: Fossilized coral fragments incorporated into a tuff deposit at Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii from a past #volcanic #eruption through an offshore reef, with former Big Wave #surfer & #oceanographer Ricky Grigg βš’οΈπŸŒŠ

πŸ§ͺ @urigso.bsky.social is committed to #sustaiable #ocean #science. Are we going Geothermal? We will see.. Exploratory drilling to assess our resource took place last week. If sufficient we will look to use for our new Ocean Frontiers research lab building, slated to be done in 2027. πŸŒŠπŸ›

πŸ§ͺ US public funding supports amazing science. Here are 4 ~100 million yr old deep ocean crust rocks exposed in the Puerto Rico trench North Wall, formed at the Mid Atlantic Ridge nearly 7000 km away & slowly rafted by Plate Tectonics to this site. Collected with DSV Alvin, 2022; more in ALT text βš’οΈπŸŒŠ

πŸ§ͺ I am enticing with this image, but have something serious to say: I am saddened for USA & our much-valued federal agency science partners that πŸ‘πŸ€‘πŸ€‘πŸ€‘ &πŸ›with small ❀️, smaller 🧠, & even smaller πŸ†are indiscriminately βœ‚οΈπŸͺšπŸ”ͺwhat we do, how we do it, & who is involved. But scientific research will continue.
