Avoid the violence/nonviolence debate. It’s a trap. The only thing that matters is what actions lead to more justice and less harm. Inaction and complicity in the face of brutal oppression is the worst form of violence. Never forget it.

"In the custodial state...the citizen enters the scene in a mode of resignation–a way of being held in perpetual custody–as the only guarantee of protection both from state power and by it." NEW from Debaditya Bhattacharya ctjournal.org/2025/05/29/w...

The Palestinian town of Umm al-Fahm is on the frontlines of the struggle against Israeli state terror and genocide.

"She was also Gaza’s youngest influencer, offering practical survival tips for daily life under bombardment, such as advice on how to cook with improvised methods when there was no gas. 'I try to bring a bit of joy to the other children so that they can forget the war. '”

THIS. Every single word. Students are the reason why we do what we do.

Seeing a lot of confusion about the budget's provisions on trans care--it would strip Medicaid funds for trans care (which is awful enough) but it would NOT prohibit private insurers from providing coverage for trans care. It actually does something far more narrow and wonkier

happy for Khalil of course but i must say, "lawful permanent resident not charged with any crimes, imprisoned by president's stormtroopers for having forbidden opinions about US-abetted genocide, briefly allowed to touch his child" is a hell of a thing to find oneself feeling joy and relief about

Must-read material for SF scholars and fans here:

Around 100.000 people have been demonstrating in The Hague against our government's stance towards, and complicity in, Israel's genocide in Gaza. This is huge for two reasons: (1) the largest demonstration in 20 yrs; (2) The Netherlands is traditionally pro-Israel. Picture: nos.nl/artikel/2567...

“Today, on Nakba Day, … we attest that, by speaking truth to power, we work toward making state violence less possible everywhere, whether here on the campuses and streets of the United States or, more pressingly, in Gaza and all of Palestine.”

A new report finds the bottom 60% of U.S. households—or *two-thirds* of the population—can't afford a “minimal quality of life": housing, health care, and other necessities. "Indicators like GDP and unemployment tell us the economy is thriving. But they don’t reflect the reality of most Americans."

"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging." Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council. I wrote about my decision in TIME. time.com/7285045/resi...

Across higher ed, “I have never seen a climate of fear like this in my life" Todd Wolfson & @chenjerai.bsky.social @aaup.bsky.social tell me. "But I’m seeing something else too... that fear is turning into anger & that anger is turning into action" Listen to our vital conversation @therealnews.com

Last fall, Blue Cross got hit with a $421 million verdict after jurors found it defrauded doctors. It was one of the biggest verdicts ever outside a class action - and it revealed the inner workings of how insurers block payments. My latest. www.propublica.org/article/blue...

Before folks overreact to headlines about the judge’s ruling in the Khalil case, please note that (1) it was an immigration judge (IJ), not a federal district court; and (2) the IJ had no power to consider Khalil’s constitutional objections. This particular decision was a fait accompli.

I feel physically sick.

Breaking News: The Trump administration intends to block $510 million in federal contracts and grants for Brown University.

www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/ma.... Absolutely perfect, and incisive, piece by Adam Shatz. How all universities, not just Columbia, are not just collaborating with Trump, but colluding with him.

The Chronicle asked universities how they would respond if the Trump admin demanded that they: -Expel students -Remove control of a department from the faculty -Change student discipline policy The response? "No college or university... answered any of our questions." 😞 #academicsky #edusky

Any and all of us can be disappeared by the regime. I hope that people really understand this. This is the time on the fascist clock we're currently on.

This not only terrorizes international scholars but will also have a tremendous impact on the research landscape. People will not be able to compete their dissertations, finish books, get tenure, etc all b/c they cannot risk travel. This is a huge blow to knowledge production as well as inhumane.

In Massachusetts, at Logan airport, immigration thugs stripped an innocent man naked, tortured him, and pressured him to give up his green card.

🚨Last week Helyeh Doutaghi, a scholar in international law, was barred from Yale and put on administrative leave: ‘The decision came three days after a news site powered by artificial intelligence, published a story calling her a member of a terrorist group.’ www.removepaywall.com/search?url=h...

My union @swcolumbia.bsky.social has created a resource to support international students who are experiencing increasingly higher risk of immigration enforcement. We have done this on our own time while the University has remained silent and complicit. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

The jailing of a Palestinian protester by ICE raises urgent concerns about universities’ role in suppressing pro-Palestine activism. Critics warn that by enabling such crackdowns, institutions risk undermining their own commitment to academic freedom.
