An update on the Spinoza and Simone Weil conference: the other organisers and I have decided to extend the deadline for submissions to March 10th, to give anyone who wanted to submit an additional week to prepare their abstracts. See the new CFP below:

I just saw a post alleging that among the “tells” a post is written by ChatGPT is use of an em dash—not to be confused with its younger sibling the en dash, or lil’ baby hyphen—and frankly fuck that. The noble em dash is maybe the most versatile punctuation—I use it constantly.

Just 12 days left to submit your papers for the Spinoza and Simone Weil conference, please share far and wide!

me reading a contemporary philosophical position: this is just Locke's view with a paint job me reading historical philosophers: if you look at the change in wording between the fourth and fifth editions of the Essay, he says "by only" instead of "only by", so it's essentially an entirely new view

I’m organizing a conference for philosophy graduate students—The 14th Annual Arché Graduate Conference! This will be a great opportunity for students to present their work, network, and spend some time on the charming Scottish coastal town, St Andrews! Please share with your network. #philsky

Here's a new paper of mine, forthcoming in Analysis. It's on two ways of making precise the distinction between truth in vs. truth at a possible world. Check it out if that sort of thing floats your boat! philpapers.org/rec/MASTDA-8

Just finished the draft script for the first podcast episode on Descartes! So excited to be writing about him after almost 15 years of podcasting, it sometimes seemed I would never get this far.

You get a velociraptor by dividing a distanceraptor by a timeraptor. If you have another timeraptor on hand to divide the resulting velociraptor by, you can get an accelleraptor.

Assuredly nothing forbids man to enjoy himself, save grim and gloomy superstition.... No deity, nor anyone else, save the envious, takes pleasure in my infirmity and discomfort, nor sets down to my virtue the tears, sobs, fear, and the like, which are signs of infirmity of spirit. ~Spinoza

even numbers are aesthetically averse. odd numbers are just prettier, like in themselves. they're also more confident. you can just tell 🤷

I liked one photo of a fox on my first day using Bluesky and now my feed is like OH YOU LIKE FOXES HUH and basically only shows me pictures of foxes. I continue to like them, so I think this is going to be a self-perpetuating phenomenon.
