Yeah so the Constitution isn’t really in effect right now

Have you called your Senators today? I asked: Why is an unelected immigrant whose family benefited from apartheid, and his unelected staff, running rampage in our databases and agencies? He must be stopped now. NOW!!

This Black History Month read and reflect on powerful stories of courage and persistence. Find resources, scholarly journals, and articles to read and share with your students. janetsalmons.substack.com/p/black-hist...

What is the value and use of history in contemporary society and culture? We're delighted to launch a new OA short-form book series - 'Elements in History and Contemporary Society', with @cambridgeup.bsky.social - to explore this question. Proposals now invited bit.ly/4aqCiG4 1/2 👇 #Skystorians

What a sobering time to celebrate Black History Month! I don’t know about you, but I find the persistence and courage of those who’ve fought for justice inspiring just now. Find a trove of links to relevant scholarly journals, articles, and other resources in this newsletter. tinyurl.com/ycybvab9

Got my copies of Ella Harris's excellent book on i-docs, aka interactive documentary, as a research method. Fascinating stuff! Delighted it's in the series I edit for @policypress.bsky.social. Also, now we have 4 books published, it's starting to look like a series! Plenty more in the pipeline 📚

An extraordinary week spent discussing Openness, Transparency and Rigour at #QRS2025! Thank you to everyone for creating an incredibly inspiring, and friendly conference! Check out our great summary vid including our keynotes @maddipow.bsky.social and Sarah Neal 💪 What did you learn from QRS 2025?

If you are a federal worker being offered a buyout, I would advise against taking it. Of course, this is a personal decision for everyone and it’s your choice. But these offers are a rush job. The legality is questionable and this admin does not keep to its word. They aren’t firing for a reason.

"Conventionally, researchers use one or perhaps two methods and impose them on participants. Research can be done well this way. However, our work has shown that giving participants choices [of creative methods] can benefit early years research at all stages."

I have a new post on the Scholarly Kitchen. The motivation to write it went beyond simply being tired of the tedious, ubiquitous, “rewrite with AI” prompts. Let’s not let these tools take away our unique voices. Instead affirm each other’s worth and celebrate diverse stories. tinyurl.com/2h9sxw2r

Last summer, @peterpomerantsev.bsky.social and I produced a short podcast series, Autocracy in America. We talked about the changed that preceded an assault on democracy in other countries, and we found them here. Perhaps useful background for the current moment. www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/aut...

In January I’m focusing on the initial stage of qualitative social research: defining a problem that merits study. Learn from those who have relevant firsthand experience. How can this approach make our research more respectful and impactful? tinyurl.com/rmx9c7cu open.substack.com/pub/janetsal...
